With the other contributors back at Uni doing more important things, you’ll probably notice more and more posts from me and less from them. I’ll try my hardest to branch outside of the square I usually post in but I can’t promise anything. This post is hardly going to be anything new.
First off, We$tern Tink has just dropped a new track from his upcoming Chillin Like A Civillian mixtape called “Burrr”. This one’s produced by TrueHappiMess and if it’s not a homage to Gucci Mane, I’m not sure what is. Check out the Iggy look-a-like too…

Even though I’m a couple of weeks late on this one (I don’t know how I missed it) here’s another one from K.R.I.T. It’s called King Pt. 2 and it’s exactly as it suggests, a continuation from where King left off.

Next, a collaboration between the Main Attrakionz boys (Squadda, I’d still like you to father my children please) and cLOUDDEAD pals Jel and Zachg has surfaced, the project called cLOUDLIFE. I think this one is a bit of an acquired taste but because I like to keep everyone up to date with everything M.A. do, I’m posting it anyway. You can stream via Spin before it’s officially released tomorrow.

Back $ellin Crack, a solo mixtape from one-half of New Underground crew Main Attrakionz is indeed, a street rap album, which may seem odd from this duo best known for making “cloud rap” — diffuse hip-hop, in which feeling and mood took precedence over lyrics, or even cohesion. Given the low-stakes accusations often sent Main Attrakionz’ way, this mixtape feels vital. Squadda B declares that while rap’s aesthetic goal posts have moved — eccentric former crack-slingers like Main Attrakionz scan as “weirdos” while a fount of cinematic cliches like Ross gets over as a “gangsta” — his mind is still filled with harsh memories of hustling.

Although this was released some time ago I thought I should say a few words about “Lost Planet” featuring production from Party Trash (who you might have seen on here before) and rapping from Sortahuman.
Recently Sortahuman, hailing from Alabama, released Stonergang, featuring production from some really notable names like SpaceGhostPurp as well as blockbeataz, and I’ve got to say I was pretty disappointed. The production on Stonergang was generally on point, but Sortahuman lacked the content and flow to really do the beats justice, falling back into some predictable patterns and cheesy, weed related rhymes.
That being said I think Sortahuman is great, and Lost Planet is testament to the off kilter brand of hip hop lovingly branded “lo-fi Southern Hip hop from another planet”. Party Trash continues his interesting production, providing a dark, all consuming backdrop of part southern, part noise production. Check out my favourite off the tape, “Clowns” (above) featuring Main Attrakionz Squadda B and some interesting visuals from “Crazy Thoughts”, also off the album.

Another big producer to keep your ears out for at the moment is Keyboard Kid. The Seattle producer has made a big impact over the last year, working with the likes of Lil B, Soulja Boy and Squadda B of Main Attrakionz. He’s had a constant stream of releases and if you’re a fan of them, his latest tape BasedInTheRain666 won’t disappoint. I found it to be far more refined than his previous works, none of that clumsy stuff you’re used to hearing from him every so often. The other positive change you’ll hear is the #based producer focusing on a more flowing, lush sound, similar to that of our boy Clams. If he’s your thing, I’d recommend giving it good listen.

In October this year, one of my favourite duos Main Attrakionz paid their second visit to New York in a number of months to perform at Shea Stadium in Brooklyn. I’m not usually one for listening to live sets when I have the real thing instead but this one is a winner. Mondre and Squadda keep their energy high and the performance is almost flawless. The set list includes a great selection of tracks from across a number of their tapes, including quite a few from their most recent 808s and Dark Grapes II. It comes together really well.
